In 1953, when the city of Monterrey was still young and the automotive industry was growing rapidly, José C. Gonzalez, a man of great vision, put his soul and dedication into making a dream come true. Little did he imagine that his efforts would become the motor that would drive local industry and give rise to what is now a leading international brand. His dream materialized in Grupo GONHER, today a world leader in automotive parts.
Back then, in a small workshop on Aramberri Street in downtown Monterrey, Nuevo León’s capital, Don José and a team of six other people launched the production of Gonher de México. The small workshop of 100 square meters manufactured only four types of automotive filter.
Six years later, thanks to the efforts and dedication of Don José and his team, the company acquired new machinery and began to expand, first to 1,500 square meters and then to 3,000 square meters, allowing them to incorporate a research laboratory.
The 1960s proved to be very successful for GONHER, with the automation of production through the installation of new lines and increased self-reliance in filter parts. The first office building and manufacturing plant was inaugurated on Felix U. Goméz Avenue in downtown Monterrey. These headquarters would serve the company for more than a decade.
New challenges arose in the ’70s, as the company responded to the increased demand for auto parts. In 1971, GONHER began the construction of a filter production facility. Located in Santa Catarina, Nuevo León, this plant produced fuel and air filters with modernized and automated stamping presses. During this time, GONHER operated 18 distribution centers for customer service.
During the ’80s, the company grew even further, as it increased the number of distribution centers in Mexico to 22, actively entered the international marketplace and expanded the production area to 30,000 square meters.
With the arrival of the final decade of the 20th century, Grupo GONHER diversified its production and entered new markets. QS-9000/ISO-9002 International Certification positioned the company to become a major global player.
At the start of the 21st century, Grupo GONHER sought to expand its horizons even further, buying Mighty Auto Parts, a U.S. auto parts company, and thereby entering the important market north of the border. The company also created Pro1One, Mexico’s largest spare parts retail chain.
Today, Grupo GONHER has more than 3,000 employees nationwide, owns 36 distribution centers, and produces more than 700 types of filter. This growth reflects its continuing focus on satisfying all its markets’ needs.
Today, GONHER is widely recognized for the world-class quality of its products and services. Thanks to our customers’ preference, we continue to lead the auto parts market, contributing with our dedication and focus to the development of Mexico.
